Born in Luzern, Switzerland, Florian Halbedl Hess immigrated to Canada with his family in 2000. While studying Medical Sciences at Western University, he shot his first short film for a Vertebrate Biology class - a fruitful and unexpected catalyst into the world of filmmaking. He graduated with a double major in Film Studies and Medical Sciences, receiving his B.A. in 2009.
Based in Vancouver with his partner and collaborator Luna Ferguson, Halbedl Hess has contributed to a wide range of film and television productions, including Joe Carnahan’s The A-Team, Gareth Edward’s Godzilla, Patricia Rozema’s Into the Forest, Duncan Jones’ Warcraft, and Gene Stupnitsky’s Good Boys. His work in television includes Shut Eye, Project Blue Book, The Man in the High Castle, Batwoman, Cruel Summer and The Recruit, and Elle to name but a few.
In 2012, he co-founded Turbid Lake Pictures with Luna, where he wrote and directed a series of short films that have screened at over sixty film festivals internationally. His work includes the award-winning and Directors Guild of Canada-nominated Whispers of Life (2013), Limina (2016), Henry’s Heart (2019), Circle (2020), 0UTL4W (2021), and a pilot presentation for the yet-to-be produced series Kinships (2024).
He is one of three founding partners of DOMUS Pictures in 2026 - along with Luna Ferguson and Brad Harder - a filmmaker-led production company conceived as a ‘House’ for creators and bold, authorial cinema grounded in atmosphere, creativity, and a commitment to sustainable and disciplined filmmaking.
His current work explores psychologically- and mood-driven storytelling across genres, with projects in development including Nebel, a family thriller set in the Swiss mountains, Lorelei, a psychosexual horror feature, and Mosaics a high-concept science-fiction series.
